English 5
In this course, students continue to develop writing and reasoning skills, increase knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, and cultivate an interest in reading. The program works on writing skills through specific creative writing assignments. Students look closely at short stories, plays, and poems, then write original pieces of each kind. Heavy emphasis is placed on the process of writing; students create several drafts, revising and editing their work before producing final copies. Reasoning skills are improved through the writing of interpretive essays, the study of logic, and close analysis of selected readings. The study of vocabulary includes meanings of new words, usage, classical roots, and proper spelling. The grammar portion of the course introduces the eight parts of speech and applies this knowledge to the skill of revising and editing. Throughout the year, students are required to read novels of their own choosing from a set list of books that includes a wide range of genres.

English 6
The primary goal of English 6 is to continue to develop strong reading and writing skills and an understanding of the structure of the language. Students acquire appropriate oral and silent reading techniques through the study of short stories, poetry, novels, and plays. Writing, with emphasis on description, is presented as a process which provides for almost limitless variation and development. The program is divided into discrete stages permitting students to become familiar with the basic steps of writing. Letter writing is also taught. Formal vocabulary work facilitates the process. Parts of speech, sentence components, and classification of sentences based on purpose and structure form the core of instruction in grammar and mechanics which is applied consistently in composition work.

English 7
Through the study of novels, short stories, poetry, and plays, students develop basic skills in literary analysis and interpretation. Writing proficiency is a critical component and grammar emphasizes parts of speech, basic sentence structure, and usage. Vocabulary study exposes the students to new words, their spelling and definitions, and develops an understanding of synonyms, antonyms, homonyms, dictionary skills, multiple meanings, and alternative forms of given words. Methodology includes memorizing, analyzing, previewing, questioning, and reviewing material.

English 8
Primary emphasis is placed on the further development of reading and writing skills. By studying complex works, students gain the capacity to understand and create metaphor. They also learn to appreciate literature through the study of genre, setting, mood, and character analysis. By memorizing, reciting, and composing poetry, students develop a stronger memory, aesthetic sensibility, and good speech habits. The formal study of vocabulary requires them to strive for increasing precision in the use of language.
