Upper School Music

Chorale
This course is open to all Upper School students with or without prior choral experience. The two-fold focus of this course is the proper training and development of the individual voice and the creation of a well-balanced and blended choral sound. Musical sensitivity grows from learning cooperation in a musical ensemble, making artistic decisions, increasing musical literacy, developing listening skills, and performing. Performance selections feature the diverse musical styles of composers representing a variety of cultures and eras. Recent performances include Britten'sCeremony of Carols, Rutter's Dancing Day, Pinckham's Christmas Cantata, Vivaldi's Gloria, Schubert's Mass in G, Fauré's Requiem, and Handel's Messiah.

Schola Cantorum
Admission to this group is through audition and limited enrollment is reserved for those students who are active members of Chorale. The course is designed to improve vocal and choral technique through the mastery of more demanding choral works of various styles. Pieces range from liturgical settings for school worship services to jazz for recital and concert performances. Strong emphasis is placed on a cappella singing. Soloists for Chorale are chosen from members of Schola Cantorum.

Cantor Training
Open to students in grades ten through twelve who are active members of Chorale, this workshop offers students training and experience in leading song in a liturgical context for various school services held throughout the year.
